Shepherd SM/90 Drone Reeds
Shepherd SM/90 Drone Reeds are the very first all plastic telescopic drone reed.
All three reeds are uniquely the same. The telescopic control allows the reeds to be used either as bass or tenor reeds.
Fitting & Set Up Instructions
Adjust the hemp on all three reeds so they fit securely into the reed seats.
The reeds are set up to an average setting prior to being packaged, so the reeds should only require a very small amount of manipulation, if any, to get them up and going.
The main considerations to start with are that the Blade and Bridle are primarily used to set the strength of the reed and the Telescopic Adjustment is used to set the pitch of the reed and in turn determining where the drone tunes.
With this in mind, the reeds are relatively easy to set up.
The Bass Reed will have to be longer than the 2 tenor reeds to achieve its low pitch. (as shown above)
To set the strength of the reeds, it is very important to only move the bridle a minute amount at a time. (less than 1mm) and to ensure that the blades are sitting nice and evenly on the bodies.
Once the strength is set, play the pipes for a few minutes to see where the drones are tuning. If they are tuning too low then the reeds will have to be made shorter and if they are tuning too high the reeds made longer. To use the telescopic feature, simply turn the large lock nut about half a turn until it reaches a loose spot. Then lengthen the reed by gently sliding it along the telescopic pin. Then turn the lock nut back until it reaches a tight spot.
It is important to note that it is advisable to treat the reeds very carefully and gently and to always make very small adjustments.
